Here's one I made earlier!

Today is my daughter's 7th birthday, and after a birthday trip to the reef yesterday and the big day today, I haven't had much time to make anything to tell you about!

So I decided to cheat, and show something I made a while ago - ok a long time ago!!

Shopping bags!

I have had the supermarket shopping bags for a long time now, and they were starting to disintigrate, the cooler bags were beginning to discolour and smell, despite several washes. And let's face it, it's a bulky bag of bags to carry into the shops every week.

So, the solution was to use that flowery old bed sheet we were given years ago when we first arrived in Australia, and have never really used other than as a dust sheet.

I measured it out, cut it up and made ten shopping tote bags and a small backpack to carry them in. As you can see in the photo, it's much smaller to carry than the supermarket ones, and much prettier too!!

Every week I use them in the supermarket I get comments on how great they are! I never need to have my meat wrapped in plastic, as the bags can be soaked or thrown in the washing machine if they get anything on them.

They're tough and stylish!! and I love them.

I've been using them for about a year now for my weekly shopping, and even if the bags are packed chock full of tins and cans, there's no sign of any tears or splits!

I still haven't gotten round to making the fruit and veggie bags from old net curtains for our weekly market trip, but I'll get there soon.

Hope you like this eco-friendly idea! A great use for a sheet that looks much better as bags!

Now my daughter is wanting to use the computer to check her birthday emails! so I have to go!

  2. Great idea! I use the green bags from Coles but they always manage to overfill them which make them difficult to load/unload into the car. Yours are a much better size - and very stylish too!
