Make a new ironing board cover!

My ironing board cover was looking a little sad, and desperately in need of a makeover!

So I decided it was time to replace it.
Now lucky for me, my husband does most of the ironing in our house !!  But this also meant no fancy, pretty fabrics - I don't want to put him off this job which is one of my pet hates!!

I found some nice plain fabric and set to work!
All I did was take off the old cover - cut the foam part out, use this as the template to cut some new fresh fabric, and attach the foam to this with my overlocker (serger)

Then I added a strip of fabric about 10cm (4") wide all around the main piece, and turned over the outside to make an elastic casing.  Fed through some elastic and secured it:

Then all I had to do was slip the new cover over my ironing board and step back to admire!!

What do you think? Definitely an improvement - and I'm going to try hard to not cut or mark this one....

  3. I so need to do this. My ironing board cover is cut up and marked all over too. My solution is to just toss a big piece of flannel that I'm never going to use for anything else over it. I might just have to try this!

  5. I always get stuff on mine- that is the price of being creative with my fabric. I have been thinking about adding another layer of cushioning to my current cover. It is getting so thin I am getting marks when I iron from the frame. Thanks for this tutorial.

  7. Hi Jill! What a fantastic idea. They don't make ironing board covers like they used to and I'd love to be able to make one. Thanks so much for sharing. (PS I'm a blogger in Brisbane and have a linky party every week called "Thriving on Thursday" where I share frugal, crafty ideas and recipes etc. I'd love for you to link this up if you got a chance.
